Traveling with children can be a daunting task, but with some strategic planning and a few tried-and-true life hacks, you can turn the journey into a fun and memorable adventure for the whole family. As a mom married to an Italian man, our annual summer trips to Italy to visit the grandparents (nonni) have taught me a lot about navigating travel with kids. Here are my top five life hacks for making the most of your travels.
1. Check Nearby Airports for Better Fares
This year, we saved a whopping $1600 on tickets for myself and three kids by choosing to fly from Montreal instead of Ottawa. This trick can make a significant difference in your travel budget. We drove to Montreal, spent a delightful day exploring the Insectarium and the beautiful gardens – lots of walking, which is perfect for tiring out the kids before a long flight. In the evening, we headed to the airport refreshed and ready for our journey.
2. Opt for an Overnight Flight to Europe
Overnight flights to Europe might not be everyone’s first choice, but they work wonders for us. Here’s why: we board the plane, the kids watch some cartoons, dinner is served, and then it’s time to brush teeth and settle in for sleep. Although the night is shorter, we arrive in Europe in the morning, which helps with jet lag. Plus, the kids can always catch a nap during the second leg of the trip from our transit airport to our final destination.
3. Bring Your Own Food
Airplane food can be hit or miss, especially for picky eaters. The options are usually limited to a meat dish and a vegetarian pasta. To avoid any mealtime meltdowns, I often buy food at the airport before boarding. Last time, I brought pizza for the kids. You can also grab a meal at the airport since the onboard dinner is often served late.
4. Utilize Special Provisions for Little Kids
Traveling with toddlers comes with its own set of challenges, but there are special provisions you can take advantage of. For instance, you can bring water and liquid food, like pureed pouches, for kids under two. Many airlines offer bassinets for infants (up to 9-12 months, depending on the airline). Make sure to ask about these options when booking. There are usually changing tables in the restrooms, and the flight attendants can show you how to use them.
5. Pack Entertainment and Snacks
Keeping kids entertained during the flight is crucial. I pack coloring books, small toys, and fidget toys. Snacks are a must, and my kids also bring their favorite small stuffed animals. Traveling with kids doesn’t have to be stressful. With these life hacks, you can ensure a smoother, more enjoyable journey for everyone. Happy travels!
